On Monday September 6th there will be a memorial event at HKW in Berlin to celebrate the life of my very good friend Jeff McGrory, who sadly passed away in December of last year. I first met Jeff ten years ago when I began working with Gob Squad, the Berlin-based arts collective. Very soon after, fuelled by a mutual interest in the music of people such as David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Arve Henriksen, Ayvind Aarset and many others; and inspired by travelling, dogs, cryptozoology and consuming curry, we started writing music together as Animal Magic. We had the good fortune that our technical work gave us the chance to travel the world together and we enjoyed many unforgetable moments.
This second release on Tzara Music is understandably tinged with a considerable amount of sadness. However, listening to Jeff’s inventive and cheeky guitar playing I’m reminded of his indefatigable playful spirit and this always brings a smile to my face. A wonderful human being, an amazing musician and sound designer, he will be missed by many.
